What is The Board of Revision?
The Board of Revision (BOR) is an independent body that hears property assessment appeals.
If you believe your property assessment is incorrect, you may file an appeal to have it reviewed by the Board.
What Can Be Appealed?
You can appeal your property assessment, not your taxes.
Examples include:
-
Incorrect property classification (e.g., agricultural vs. residential)
-
Incorrect property details (size, buildings, features)
-
Assessment does not reflect market value
-
Assessment is not fair compared to similar properties
What Cannot Be Appealed
The Board of Revision cannot change:
-
Tax rates or mill rates
-
Your total property taxes
-
Municipal budgets or spending decisions
Appeal Deadline
-
Appeals must be filed within 30 days of the date on your Assessment Notice, 60 days in a revaluation year.
-
Late appeals cannot be accepted.
Appeal Fee
-
A $350 appeal fee is required at the time of filing.
-
The fee may be refunded if your appeal is successful (depending on policy).
